New Icons and a Trash Can
April 27, 2007
Next time you will delete an item from your steekr space, the files will not go away immediately, but remain in the new Trash folder. The folder appears automatically the first time you are deleting files.
Oh, and those are our new folder icons. How do you like them?
Address Book Backups in Vista
April 26, 2007
One of the many improvements in Vista is the system-wide Address Book application and its framework. Instead of having each application have its own list of contacts, Vista now offers a common, shared framework that all applications are supposed to use.
If you are on Vista, SteekUP will save your Address Book at the same level as your email application data, _not inside_ the Outlook, Windows Mail or other application-specific folder.
Just like the Vista designers would like it.
Steek Blog Address Changed
April 24, 2007
We shuffled a bit the French and English Steek blog addresses and made them more intuitive for our multilingual audience. Yes, French _and_ English counts for multilingual, thank you.
Starting right now, this — i.e. blog.steek.com — will be the English Steek Blog address.
Dorenavant, le blogue Steek en français sera publié à l’adresse blogue.steek.com.
Please update your RSS feeds accordingly, and please let us know if anything isn’t working as expected.
HP France and Steekup
April 18, 2007
If you’re buying a PC from HP in France in the upcoming months, HP and Steek will offer you a one year subscription to SteekUP.
See it on hp.steekup.com and soon on the HP web store.
Share links update
April 17, 2007
The steekr link share pages received a couple of discrete but important upgrades:
- Every share page has now a link to the steekr signup page, so visitors can subscribe right away if they want to. I can’t believe we didn’t have this since the beginning.
- Under the file lists area, you’ll find the link to a live RSS feed for your shared space. Use your feed reader to stay up to date with the changes.
A tab life
April 13, 2007
Here’s a little tip for better using the tabs feature on IE or Mozilla. They allow you to always have your steekr space opened in your web browser, accessible in one click. Having your steekr always opened is a great way to use it as a real external drive. With the new steekr DriveDrive Windows Explorer integration and the steekr Drive automatic synchronization, the steekr web space becomes really easy to use.
Firefox’s Session Restore remembers the windows and tabs you had open when you shutdown your system and retrieves them all when the browser is re-launched. From my point of view, this is a small revolution for Internet navigation. Here’s why.
First, log in on the steekr home page. Enter your login and password and validate the “Remember me” option. Your browser will log you in automatically on your next visit.

Go on the Tools menu and select Options entry. On the Main tab, find the option When Firefox starts and set it to Show my windows and tabs from last time.
Here we are! Next time you will launch Firefox, your steekr account with be opened and ready in no time.
PS: If you and all your friends still don’t have a steekr account with 1GB free, get it here.
161 billion gigabytes
April 11, 2007
I found this article in EMC site last week about the size of our digital universe.
- The 2006 digital universe was 161 billion gigabytes (161 exabytes) in size.
- IDC projects a six fold annual information growth from 2006 to 2010.
- While nearly 70% of the digital universe will be generated by individuals by 2010, organizations will be responsible for the security, privacy, reliability and compliance of at least 85% of the information.

SteekR DriveDrive – public beta
April 7, 2007

Today we are launching the public beta of steekr DriveDrive, a tool that gives you access to your online steekr space directly inside Windows Explorer. Now you can use steekr like you would use a simple USB key. It’s that simple, and it’s incredibly useful, despite its silly name.
Give it a try, its free and only 4MB: steekr DriveDrive installer 1.2b.exe. Just remember that it’s a beta and it wasn’t tested as thoroughly as a full release. It may behave unexpectedly, loose your data and scare your pets.
Enjoy.
