To PC or not to PC - Users Decide When to Stream Media from the Internet

San Francisco (USA), Paris (France), [31/08/2007] Orb Networks, whose PC application lets users stream media from their PC to any other internet-connected device, today announced how, with Agematis, users could stream their content without using their PCs.

By integrating the Orb MyCast service with Steek, a network based solution from Agematis, the two companies highlighted the added insurance, convenience, transferability, and anytime access benefits of an internet-based Orb solution. More File Formats On steekR

August 30, 2007

logo SteekR The fancy new slideshow module on steekR also received a major backend revamp. It now supports dozens of formats, from the ubiquitous extensions jpg, mp3 and avi to the popular png, tiff, aac, wma, ogg, asf, mp4 or flv but also the more obscure formats like C93, DXA and CRI ADX ADPCM. I am sure the latests are very useful too :-)

You can try the new slideshow here. Click the checkbox Select 24 items, then click the Play button in the black toolbar.

The Image tab will display the only image file in the selection.

SteekR audio player If you select the musique tab–the one with the musical note–you’ll be able to listen to an excellent album, available here under a Creative Commons licence.

The magic behind the support for all these formats comes from FFmpeg, an open source “complete solution to record, convert and stream audio and video.” The list of supported formats is here.

SteekUP logoLet’s get back to the new features in the latest steekUP version, some of them described in this post from July 20th.

SteekUP bandwidth
First, this new SteekUP version allows users to master the CPU and bandwidth used by the application, thanks to the new option in the “Advanced settings” section of the Configuration tab.

Simply define a maximum transfer speed, like the 500KB/s in the screenshot, and the rest of your bandwidth will remain available to your other applications.

SteekUP add to selection
Another big innovation in steekUP is the full intégration with the Windows, especially its contextual menu and the way files and folders are listed in Windows Explorer.

At any time, you can right-click on the sected elements in Windows Explorer and add them to you steekUP selection.

Steek = Web 3.0

August 23, 2007

Steek logo
It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but I was wondering what should one think when the strategy and the product of an enterprise are the very definition of Web 3.0, according to Google’s boss.

“Google CEO Eric Schmidt was recently at the Seoul Digital Forum
and he was asked to define Web 3.0 by an audience member. After first
joking that Web 2.0 is “a marketing term”, Schmidt launched into a
great definition of Web 3.0. He said that while Web 2.0 was based on
Ajax, Web 3.0 will be “applications that are pieced together” - with
the characteristics that the apps are relatively small, the data is in
the cloud, the apps can run on any device (PC or mobile), the apps are
very fast and very customizable, and are distributed virally (social
networks, email, etc).”
