A 150 years old bank innovates with Online Storage!

March 21, 2008

Wells Fargo Vsafe

Wells Fargo Bank has announced an online storage service called vSafe that lets users store digital files and documents reports InternetNews.

This news is interesting at 3 levels:

  1. Online storage is not a “2.0″ high tech concern targeting only geeks and provided by high tech startups. Wells Fargo is a long time established bank and this is another sign that confirms online storage as a mass market standard need.
  2. Wells Fargo also understands that people have a lot of digital contents that needs to be stored online. Wells Fargo indicates their offer is made to store ” from bank statements and tax information to your favorite digital photos“.
  3. Digital content are in danger! As indicated by Wells Fargo, the purpose is to ensure “Your files remain protected from damage and theft”.

Steek online storage specialist manages data of more than 1 Million users.

These data are stored anonymously but also in an intelligent way allowing Steek to store also additionnal informations (”tag”) about these files.

Useful informations can be extracted from this and thus Steek has decided to publish regularly an observatory of digital content.

The first edition of this observatory is dedicated to digital picture.

On more than 2 millions photos:

  • 2% are without date stamp;
  • 0,5% are shooted in the futur (up to 2756!);
  • 97,5% of the photos seems to have a reasonnable date stamp.

Concerning the camera provider, here are our ranking:

  • Canon 23%
  • Sony 14%
  • Nikon 9%
  • Olymus 8%
  • Fujifilm 7,5%
  • Panasonic 6,5%

First gsm-photo camera provider: Sony Ericsson

Concerning the camera ranking:

  1. Canon EOS 400D DIGITAL
  2. Olympus E-500
  3. Canon EOS 350D DIGITAL
  4. FinePix A205S
  5. FinePix4700 ZOOM

  7. Nikon Coolpix E5700
  8. Panasonic DMC-FX10
  9. Canon PowerShot A80
  10. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P92

Concerning the pictures definition:

  • 36% of the photos have a definition lower than 2 millions pixels;
  • 17% of the photos have a definition between 2 and 5 millions pixels;
  • 47% of the photos have a definition bigger than 5 millions pixels.
