We will upgrade our service today: SteekR will move to a new version V2 one year after its launch.
This new version will provide you a new richer interface with more features:
- Access up to 50 files per page
- Sent and received shares are split into 2 different tabs
- File selection process is optimised and more efficient
and also provides you new features like:
- New multimedia player
- More sharing and publishing options
- Create your own widget and publish your content on your personal page.
Due to this version upgrade, access to your SteekR service may be temporarily affected today.

New assistance area for SteekR

Steek has just release a new assistance area for SteekR product.
This area can be accessed from the following url: http://help.steekr.com.
At Steek, we have developped this area because we understand that online storage is a great tool but not always easy to use. Make things and usages basic and easy is our main target and we focus everyday to make our products easy and fun to use. But as always with new services or new users, we need to teach and show and explain. This new area is built for that: explain and show how to use SteekR.
That is why we have put there not only user guides and FAQ but also tutorial videos.

+120 billions Gigabytes in one year!

Respect to the IDC report 2007 and in comparaison with the 2006 version (see last year post on this blog) , the digital universe is 281 billion gigabytes, almost the double in one year!
70% of this universe is made of UGC (user generated content), ie contents that are generated by individuals: videos, pictures, mp3, or video security… and a good portion is transient, ie not recorded like VOIP, radio, etc…
2 drivers are emerging from this universe that show how online storage is a deep trend in 2008 Internet world:
- Mobility: carry and access your data everywhere
- Protection: save and backup your data.
PS: a last but amazing information, the footprint of an email with a 1Mbyte attachement is 51Mbytes! Because of the email savety procedures as well as a life of an email that can be forwarded. With an email with a 1Mbyte share link then the footprint would be only 1,1 Mbyte! Another reason to use online storage system like SteekR!
Deloitte puts Online Backup as a top trend for 2008!

Deloitte has released its seventh annual predictions 2008 report, a series of three reports that examine emerging developments and predict how they will shape the technology, media and the telecom sectors.
Concerning the technoloy prediction, Deloitte report emplatizes that digital protection concern will rise and online backup will become a must have along with virus protection and insurance to enhance the lifetime of their computer. This trend could extend beyond the PC to other devices such as MP3 players, mobile phones, DVRs, external hard drives and others, as all these forms hold valuable data.

Rue du Commerce one of the leader of e-commerce in France is also offering Internet Value Added Service. Rue du Commerce is not only a retailer but also now a service operator for its very large customers base.
Since 8th april 2008, Rue du Commerce has launched a new online storage service called “Estock” and heavily promote this new service on its website. The service range includes 15GB (36€ VAT included for one year), 50GB (60€) and 100GB (78€) and a trial offer is also included: 15GB free for one month.

Steek becomes registrar with the .steek extension

Steek online storage will now benefit from an exclusive differentiation and explicit recognition: a .steek extension.
All the SteekR end users will be able to register a .steek domain. The .steek name must be between 3 and 63 characters and use letters from A to Z and numbers from 0 through 9. No spaces or special characters are permitted.
It’s estimated that a large part of the 1,2 million Steek accounts will use the service as an acronym for online storage. With the .steek name, individuals will publicize that they are sharing and streaming personnal data, allowing a variety of devices to become more effective internet tools, providing everybody with direct access to enhance tools like IPTV or mobile device as means of generating new contact and relationship.
“We are looking at the birth of the first truly storage oriented domain name” enthused Christophe Camborde, CEO of Steek, “From a business perspective, it makes the marketing of Web addresses more explicit and useful”.
Notes Christophe, “Even if a company or individual’s names are not trademarked, it still makes sense to try to control available urls. Acting now, while .steek domain names are still readily available, is a good way of maintaining future access, as the sharing and streaming usage is booming!”
